Abstract

The development of an environmentally friendly antifouling paints as solution to address the growth of biofouling. Some natural substances known to have effect as antifuling are alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, and steroids. T. catappa leaves contain that substances, so it is possible to be an alternative antifouling materials. This study aims to determine whether natural materials from T. catappa leaves can be used as an antifouling paint. Extraction of natural substances from the leaves T.catappa done by maceration. The extract of the T. catappa leaves divided into five kinds of concentrations and then added to finishing paint as antifouling material. Test plate is then immersed for 28 days at a depth of 30 cm from the sea surface. Parameters measured were biofouling biomass and biofouling coverage attachment area. Differences in biomass and the extent of adhesion as the effect of the extract concentration analyzed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) One Way at a level of 95% and Tukey's HSD Test for further tests. The relation between biofouling biomass and biofouling coverage attachment area are tested with a linear regression. The phytochemical screening test showed that T. catappa leaf extract had alkaloid, tannin, terpenoid, and steroid compounds. The results showed that T. catappa leaf extract gave significant effect (p <0,005) to the biofouling coverage attachment area and biomass. The coverage attachment area have significant influence on biomass biofouling (p <0.005)
