Abstract

Penggunaan dried activated sludge (DAS) menjadi salah satu
Jenis
DAS berasal dari pengolahan limbah domestik (IPLT),
pengolahan limbah industri (SIER), dan pengolahan limbah
Rumah Pemotongan Hewan (RPH).
Penggunaan pH
rendah dapat mempercepat proses penyisihan Cr (VI) akibat
protonasi senyawa pada DAS. Mekanisme reduksi terjadi dalam
proses penyisihan sehingga terbentuk Cr (III) dalam larutan.
Peningkatan konsentrasi Cr (VI) menyebabkan konsentrasi Cr

=================================================================

Dried activated sludge (DAS) has been used as an alternative
media to remove Cr (VI) in wastewater. The removal process was
occurred through passive uptake by interaction with several
functional groups of DAS which was resistance with metal
toxicity. These parameters were necessary considered to remove
Cr (VI) including pH and concentration of DAS. This study aims
to investigate the prospect of DAS to remove Cr (VI) and to
determine the effect of initial concentration of Cr (VI) in removal
process.
Variables used in this study were initial concentrations of Cr
(VI) and DAS origins. Cr (VI) solutions were prepared using
K2Cr2O7 with initial concentration of 50 mg/L, 100 mg/L and 150
mg/L Cr (VI). DAS was obtained from municipal sewage
treatment plant (IPLT), industrial wastewater treatment plant
(SIER), and slaughterhouse wastewater treatment plant (RPH).
Each of DAS was dried at 60 0C and added 10 g/L of DAS for
removal process. The experiment was conducted for 24 h with 6
times samples collection at 0, 1, 3, 5, 12 and 24 hours. Samples
was analyzed spectrophotometrically for Cr (VI) concentration
and AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer) for total
chromium to determine the existence of Cr (III). Initial pH of 2
was adjusted and the effect of pH and temperature were also
investigated.
The result showed that the removal of 100 mg/L Cr (VI) was
well performed by 50% with DAS from sewage and industrial
wastewater treatment plants, without pH adjustment. However, up to 99% of the removal efficiency was achieved in all
concentration of Cr (VI) regardless of DAS origins, at initial pH
2. The removal process was accelerated with pH 2 due to
protonation of functional groups of DAS. As higher initial
concentration of Cr (VI) resulted in higher removal efficiency.
The existence of Cr (III) was found in the solution as a result of
Cr (VI) reduction mechanism.
