Abstract

Indonesia is still importing salt, especially from Australia, to fulfill national needs. Salt can be defined as a chemical compounds whose main part is Sodium Chloride with impurities composed of CaSO4, MgSO4, MgCl2. The impurities affect the purity of a salt, especially in local salts. One of the obstacles is that the quality of local salt which produced in Indonesia not as good as industry salt standards. Various processes of salt purification are still being developed to improve salt quality in Indonesia. In the process of salt purification by brine washing method, salt crystals with variation of coarse size of 10-20 mesh, and 20-35 mesh, contacted on brine with concentration of 23 oBe with the ratio of salt and brine solution used 1:20, 1:40, 1:60, variations of stirring duration for 10, 30, 60 minute and stirring speed variation of 100, 200, 300 rpm. The highest NaCl content of 94.45% was obtained at washing process using salt of 20-35 mesh, at a ratio of 1:60 with a washing time of 10 minutes at a speed of 100 RPM. The process also can decrease Ca2 + and Mg2+ levels by 95,556%.
