Abstract

Chromium (Cr) and Manganese (Mn) are heavy metals that have high oxidation potentials that can cause mutagenesis and carcinogenic to living organisms. Most of the bacteria known to be resistant and even can reduce Cr and Mn. Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) appear as an application in the processing of Cr and Mn metals. Technology based on MFC represents a new approach to waste treatment into energy. One good alternative is to develop bio-based fuel cells. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bioreactor that converts the chemical energy of organic compounds into electrical energy through the catalytic reaction of microorganisms in anaerobic conditions. Most of the bacteria identified capable to generating electricity by reducing metals. The aim of this research are to find out the role of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 bacteria in making electric energy by utilizing organic waste, and to find out the concentration of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 on the side of the most influential anode to reduce Cr, Mn, and mixed metal on the cathode side by using Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The research method used organic solution of sugar factory liquid waste (molasses) with ratio of bacteria concentration of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 10%; 12.5%; 15% (v/v) on the anode side, on the cathode side using Cr (VI), Mn (VII) solutions, and mixed the ratio of 1:0 ; 0:1 ; 1:1. This method was carried out with a dual chamber reactor connected to a salt bridge and graphite electrodes in each chamber attached to a copper cable. The result of this research are Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) method of dual chamber able to convert sugar mill waste into electrical energy and reduce Cr and Mn metal with the help of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 15% bacteria concentration variable is the best condition to produce the highest electricity production, which is equal to 46,33 (mW/m2). Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 15% concentration was the best condition to reduce heavy metal Cr6+ to Cr3+ in variable Cr and Mn mixed metals with an initial concentration of 8.01 mg/L to 1.43 mg/L with a percent removal of 82,15%. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 15% concentration is the best condition to reduce heavy metal Mn7+ to Mn2+ in the largest mixture of Cr and Mn with initial concentration of 8.01 mg/L to 2.95 mg/L with a percent removal of 63,17%. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 15% concentration is the best condition to decrease the highest BOD5 content in Cr metal variables with initial concentration of 4905 mg/L to 2505 mg/L with percent removal of 48.24%.
