Abstract

=========== Timor Island is one of the islands in Nusa Tenggara Archipelago that has a very complicated and interesting geological structure to study. In this research, an attempt to interpret the subsurface structure of Timor Island was made by applying the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) technique to the gravity anomaly data of Timor Island. CWT applying was intend to reduce the non-unique and ambiguity problems that often happened on the analysis and interpretation of gravity anomaly data, because CWT technique is able to provide the geometry model, depth, and location of the anomaly source without a priori information. These outputs of CWT can be used as the basic information for further 2D inverse modelling and interpretation to obtain the density information. Research was held using secondary gravity anomaly data provided by the website http://topex.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/get_data.cgi, with the entire Timor Island area as the research zone. CWT technique was applied to analyze the local anomaly data using Matlab software, and the 2D modelling and interpretation was held with inversion method using Grav2DC software by making models referring to the CWT outputs.
The results show that the subsurface structure of Timor Island is composed by a combination of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks consist of Slate rocks with the density range of 2,741 gr/cm3 to 2,802 gr/cm3, Phyllite rocks with the density range of 2,714 gr/cm3 to 2,785 gr/cm3, Schist rocks with the density of 2,680 g/cm3, and Granulite rocks with the density of 2,670 gr/cm3. Sedimentary rocks consist of Limestone rocks with density of 2,733 gr/cm3, Dolomite rocks with the density range of 2,685 gr/cm3 to 2,756 gr/cm3 and Shale rocks with the density of 2,659 gr/cm3.
