Abstract

================= This study focuses on the effect of abrasive material type on surface roughness produced after sand blasting process and quality resistance of coating in protection against corrosion rate applied to steel A36. Substrate roughness is resulted from the 6 variation of abrasive materials types that have been commonly used both in the form of grit (steel grit, aluminum oxide, volcanic ash) and with the shape shot (garnet, glass beads, silica sand). The surface roughness parameter (Rz) has been measured five points on the surface of the specimen. This study found the difference between the sand blasting of abrasive grit-shaped material with the shape of shot. Coatings on substrates with steel-grit abrasive material exhibits higher pull-off strength than other variations for both primer and for top coat. The immersion of the specimen was performed by 1 mm wide scratch method on the surface of the layer and then when the evaluation of the test was carried out the scratch widening measurements took place. The results of the corrosion product compounds during the immerse test have been analyzed using XRD. The cathodic disbonding test refers to the ASTM G8 method B standard with a cathodic protection voltage of -1.5 to -1.6 V. Blistering and increased pH values resulted in cathodic disbonding testing, but cathodic delamination was not found. The quality of the coating is also reduced after cathodic disbonding is evidenced by the decreased pull-off strength. A comparison of the size and quantity of the blistering of each specimen variation has been evaluated. The results of this study indicate that increased hardness of abrasive type of material will increase the roughness of the steel surface and adhesive strength. With increasing surface roughness, the quality of the coating used in the steel is better.
