Abstract

Axle shaft berfungsi sebagai penggerak roda sehingga crane dapat berpindah tempat. Dari proses penggunaannya, ditemukan kerusakan pada bagian axle shaft yang mengakibatkan berkurangnya umur pakai karena tidak sesuainya material dengan spesifikasi yang digunakan perusahaan. Maka dari itu, dilakukan upaya peningkatan kualitas axle shaft dengan cara hardening. Hardening dilakukan pada temperatur 8500C, 8750C, dan 9000C dengan variasi waktu tahan selama 60 dan 90 menit dan media pendingin berupa air dan brine solution. Setelah diberikan perlakuan, dilakukan beberapa pengujian seperti uji kekerasan, uji metalografi, dan uji keausan. Didapatkan hasil nilai kekerasan tertinggi terdapat pada material yang dipanaskan pada temperatur 850oC dengan waktu tahan 1,5 jam yang kemudian didinginkan dengan brine solution sebesar 735 HV. Sedangkan untuk hasil uji keausan terdapat pada material yang dipanaskan sampai temperature 900oC dengan waktu tahan 1,5 jam yang kemudian didinginkan dengan brine solution sebesar 0,085 gr. Didapatkan juga hasil struktur mikro berupa lath martensite dan austenit sisa pada semua specimen ================= Axle shaft has a function to rotate installed gea in the axle shaft which connected to the wheels and finally moved the crane. At PT. PAL, after 3 months it was found failure in the part of axle shaft due to it composition which has no same specification as the company used. Therefore, to increase the quality of axle shaft, hardening was conducted. In this experiment, variations of temperature are 850oC, 875oC, and 900oC, and the variations of holding time are 1 hour and 1.5 hours. Also, the variations of cooling media are water and brine solution. After treatment, hardness test, metallography test, and wear resistance test were conducted. The highest hardness value found in material which heated at 850oC for 1 hour with brine soltion as the cooling media by 735 HV. While the highest weight loss value found in materal which heated at 900oC for 1.5 hours with brine solution as the cooling media by 0.085 gr. Beside that, micro structure like lath martensite and retained austenite was also obtained.
