Abstract

==============================================================The diesel fuel-water emulsion is a kind of diesel fuel that contain water as dispersed phase and pure diesel fuel as continuous phase.
The production of diesel fuel-water is carried out by low energy emulsification method using a mixed surfactant of Lecithin – Tween 80 and Lecithin – Triton X-100. Use of a mixed surfactant type with one of its components is Lecithin as a natural surfactant aims to produce stable and economical emulsified fuels because commercial surfactants are still costly.
The determination of emulsion fuel physics characteristics resulting from this study include physical properties consisting of viscosity and density, emulsion stability parameters based on visual sediment formation, turbidity to time ratio and the droplet size of diesel fuel-water emulsion.
The results obtained from this research are mixed surfactant composition Lecithin - Tween 80 with a ratio of 45.5% - 54.5% and Lecithin - Triton X-100 with a ratio of 76.6% - 23.4% were the best mixed surfactant seen from value of emulsion droplet size and stability. The best surfactant concentration used for emulsified fuel was 1% for Lecithin - Tween 80 with the addition of CMC co-stabilizer and lecithin - Triton X-100 without the addition of CMC. The 5% water content was the most stable emulsion of fuel for the emulsions with both types of mixed surfactants.
