Abstract

Membrane contactor technology is an improvement of CO2 removal technology combining gas absorption process with solvent and membrane technology in order to set the pattern of flow rate for avoiding operational problem that occure in conventional absorption technology. The research aims to study the influence of solvent variation towards CO2 absorption and desorption process, the influence of parameter operation (feed gas flow rate and vacuum pressure operation) towards CO2 mass transfer (absorption flux and desorption flux) and % CO2 removal absorption % desorption CO2 using polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane contactors. On the absorption process, a solvent is flowing through the tube of membrane with a constant flow rate about 100 ml/minute while the feed gas is flowing through the shell of membrane with a flow rate about 200-600 ml/minute, and than solvent rich of CO2 will be heated till 70°C and flows with vacuum condition about 88 kPa – 34 kPa. The concentration of CO2 in gas sales and CO2 in the solvent is analyzed using chittic titration. The result indicates that an activated MDEA is the best solvent to create highest flux and separation efficiency. Besides, MDEA-PZ has shown the best result as a solvent for absorption and desorption process. According to the operation parameter, the higher the flow rate of feed gas is, the higher absorption flux will be, however, the CO2 absorption separation efficiency inversely suggests a different result which goes lower. Absorption process apparently produces the highest flux value about 0.38x10-4mol/m2.second and the highest % CO2 removal absorption at gas flowrate 600ml/min is about 96.9%. Meanwhile on the desorption process, the lower the vacuum pressure operation, the higher desorption flux and % desorption CO2 will be. It produces highest flux value about 0,311x10-4 mol/m2.second and the highest value of % desorption CO2 about 20.9 %.
