Abstract

========================================================
A blind and visual impairment school is a school that accommodates blind or visual impaired students to developing their attitude, knowledge, and skills as a personal or a part of social community for having mutual relationship with the social, cultural, and natural environment and can develop skills in career or further education. In the design of the interior of YPAB School for Blind and Visual Impairment, it is necessary to have a special design that refers to the fulfillment of the needs in education and therapy and self-development which is certainly in accordance with the standards and procedures from Permendiknas. Unfortunately this has not been done by many Blind and Visually Impaired School (Type-A Special Schools) in Indonesia, SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya for example. In response, the function of the interior is no longer just as a function of fulfillment and aesthetics, but also care about the problems of society, especially for users with special needs.
The design method was conducted through data collection both quantitative and qualitative. The data collection was carried out through observation, survey, interview, and literature study. The multi-sensory concept has been chosen because it can maximize all the five senses in people with visual impairment to help their minimum vision function. In addition to being guided by the standard of facilities and infrastructure set by Permendiknas, this multi-sensorial concept is also adapted to the school identity based on the vision, mission and characteristics of SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya.
The results of this design concluded that the concept of multi-sensorial in the design of SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya is appropriate, considering it is very helpful in teaching and learning process that can be applied to the interior design approach. The achievement of positive impact for users on is when users, especially students can follow the process of education and can be oriented and moility independently without the help of others and feel noticed in results of special interior design. As feeling special, it would boost their confidence and their self judgement. So the existence of SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya in the community can be an inspiration for Blind and Visually Impaired School (Type-A Special Schools) in providing the best educational facilities for their students.
