Abstract

Cast iron has been widely used in shipbuilding industry recently. However, casting products tend to crack that can be repaired using build-up welding. This research investigates the presence of indication on build-up welded areas on cast iron products, during magnetic particle inspection.
This study uses two materials that were welded using E7016 and ENi-CI electrodes. The two different type of electrodes affect welding result due to the different process, such as current, material composition, and heat treatment. After welding were accomplished, the materials were magnetic particle inspected. The materials were sectioned on the areas of build-up welded using microstructure photographs. There are nine spots were taken, 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm on the right side from weld metal, and 10 mm, 20 mm, and 30mm on the left side from weld metal, and 10 mm, 20 mm below the weld metal.
Results from the study using magnetic particle testing discovered that indications were existed on both materials after welding procedure. Results from metallography and microstructure on both material, dispersion of fine spheroidized carbide particles discovered as cementite eutectic on both material that caused magnet force line changed as magnetic particle test is used, causing nonrelevan linear indication. The reason of changes in magnet force line was caused by high carbon composite and paramagnetic nature in the materials which interrupted magnet induction on the magnetic particle testing.
