Abstract
Turbin angin Savonius mempunyai banyak kelebihan dibandingkan yang lain
karena konstruksinya sederhana dan murah, tidak tergantung dengan arah angin dan
mempunyai torsi starter yang bagus pada kecepatan angin yang rendah. Meskipun
begitu, tipe turbin angin ini mempunyai performa yang rendah dibanding dengan tipe-
tipe turbin angin lainnya. Oleh sebab itu berbagai penelitian dilaksanakan untuk
meningkatkan performa turbin Savonius. Penelitian eksperimental ini ditujukan untuk
meningkatkan performa turbin angin Savonius dengan instalasi blluffbody tipe I-65⁰
pada upstream returning blade.
Penelitian dilakukan pada kecepatan 5 m/s, 7 m/s dan 9 m/s sesuai dengan bilangan
Reynolds masing-masing sekitar 90.000, 127.000 dan 163.000 (berdasarkan panjang
karakteristik d = 2D-e dan kecepatan aliran bebas U dari fan). Jarak titik tengah antara
silinder tipe I-65⁰ dan returning blade relatif terhadap diameter turbin S/D divariasikan
dari 1.2 sampai 2.2. Diameter silinder tipe I-65⁰ relatif terhadap diameter sudu turbin
adalah 0.5.
Hasil eksperimen menunjukan bahwa secara umum dibandingkan terhadap
turbin angin Savonius konvensional, penempatan silinder tipe I-65⁰ di depan returning
blade dari turbin Savonius lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan performanya. Hasilnya
menunjukan bahwa untuk semua nilai Re=90.000, 127.000 dan 163.000 koefisien
power dari turbin dengan silinder tipe I-65⁰ lebih besar daripada ketika turbin tanpa
silinder tipe I-65⁰. Dimana dalam kondisi ini koefisien power dari turbin Cp dengan
silinder tipe I-65⁰ untuk ketiga bilangan Reynolds semuanya dapat meningkat
maksimal masing-masing sebesar 31.00%, 25.66% and 19.64% dibanding dengan
turbin tanpa silinder tipe I-65⁰. Oleh karena itu, konfigurasi silinder tipe I-65⁰ dimana
nilai tertinggi yang diperoleh untuk ketiga nilai bilangan Reynolds telah dianalisa
secara numerik 3D dengan program Ansys Fluent 18.2 dan hasil eksperimentalnya
sepakat dengan analisa numerik

Savonius wind turbine has many advantages over others in that its
constructions are simpler and cheaper; it is independent of the wind direction and has
a good starting torque at lower wind speeds. However, this type of wind turbine has
the lowest performance compared to others types of wind turbine. That is why various
studies have been done to improve the performance of the turbine Savonius. This paper
is proposed in order to increasing the performance of Savonius wind turbine
experimentally by installing an I-65o
type bluff body at the upstream of returning blade
of the turbine.
The experiments are carried out for free stream velocity (U) of 5 m/s, 7 m/s and
9m/s corresponds to Reynolds number of about 90.000, 127.000 and 163.000
respectively (based on the characteristic length of d = 2D-e and free stream velocity
(U) from fan used. The center to center distance between the I-65o
type cylinder and
the returning blade turbine relative to turbine blade diameter S/D varied from 1.2 to
2.2. The diameter of I-65o
type cylinder relative to turbine blade diameter is 0.5.
The result of experimental show that in general compared to conventional
Savonius wind turbines, the placement of I-65o
type cylinder in front of the returning
blade of the Savonius wind turbine is more effective for improving turbine
performance. The results of this experiment show that all of three Reynolds Number
90,000, 127,000 and 163.000 respectively, the power coefficient of the turbine with
the I-65o
type cylinder is greater than when the turbine has no I-65o
type cylinder or
conventional Savonius wind turbine. Where in this condition, the power coefficient of
the turbine (Cp) with I-65o
type cylinder for all three Reynolds numbers can actually
increase about 31.00%, 31.00 % and 19.64% respectively, compared to the turbine
without the I-65o
type cylinder. Therefore, these I-65⁰ tipe cylinder configuration in
which highest values obtained have been 3D analyzed numerically with Ansys-Fluent
18.2 program and the results obtained experimentally have been supported with
numerical analisys.
