Abstract

Availability and effect of fossil fuel become subject of concern these days. Many researches offer a low-cost renewable energy, such as bioethanol from lignocellulose material like water hyacinth. The aim of this research is to produce bioethanol by dry water hyacinth hydrolysate fermentation using Zymomonas mobilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed culture. Dry water hyacinth hydrolyzed by 5% H2SO4 to obtain glucose as the carbon source for microorganisms. Glucose content was analyzed by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer and the ethanol content after fermentation was analyzed by GC. Glucose obtained from the hydrolysis process was 14,5 g/L or 0,29 g/g water hyacinth dry mass. Ethanol produced from the fermentation process for 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours were 2,7; 3,2; 4,2; and 4,8 %. Ethanol mass formed in this research were 0,4076; 0,4406; 0,6614; 0,7237 g, respectively. Meanwhile, ethanol yield obtained from water hyacinth mass were 2,04; 2,20; 3,31; and 3,62 %, respectively. The optimum result from this research is from 48 hours fermentation with ethanol 4,8 % and yield from water hyacinth mass was 3,62 %.
