Abstract
Indonesia is the sixth largest pineapple’s producer in the world. Based on data from India’s portal trade, recorded that area of Indonesia’s pineapple plantation is 20ha with 1390,38 ton production of pineapples in a year (2010-2011). Pineapple plant must be replanted every 3 months, so the amount of pineapple leaf waste is abundant. This pineapple waste is processed into fiber through extraction process. These fibers are utilized as the main material of fashion product, apparel, and automotive component in Indonesia. But this business is getting decreased in the last 3 years. The selling price of pineapple leaf fiber craft product cannot be maximum because the lack of exploration of aesthetic and strength value. Based on that facts, the author began the research by deep interview and survey to the pineapple farmer and craftspeople, followed by material treatment then creating mood-board and investigating prospective consumer through activity analysis, persona, market segmentation and market positioning. This research is not only a discourse of preservation of local business in Indonesia, but also gaves some alternative solutions to optimize the strength, aesthetic and economic value of pineapple leaves. It applies rustic concept in furniture product by exposing the characteristic of material. We also design a special tool to optimize the quality of twisting and weaving process.
