Abstract

Material on the industrial technology has developed rapidly. Materials required not only have the high strength and high toughness , but also have a light weight. One of the materials technology developing right now is a composite material because it is capable of replacing the role of conventional metal. Composite material having the lead among other power , toughness , and resistance to corrosion. One of the development of composite material is polymer matrix composite (PMC) with the addition of a hollow glass microspheres (HGM) as filler for excellence is owned by a mass of light , low thermal conductivity , and resistance to high compression. With the lead , this composite material can be applied in vehicles body or other construction.
Research done by mixing HGM with epoxy resin. The specimen produced in accordance with standard of ASTM D 790 with variations of the volume fraction of 15% to 20% with the addition of 1 percent. A specimen received three different treatment, first specimens cured in room temperature (27°C) for 24 hours , the second one is cured at room temperature (27°C) for 24 hours and the post-cured at 90°C for 5 hours , and the last specimens is cured at 90°C for 24 hours. After the production process , flexural testing done to understand the changes occurring
in composite mechanical properties.
The result obtained is the composites flexural strength
increases in the maximum 16% HGM volume fraction to the first
specimen is 45.041 MPa, second specimen is 51.293 MPa, and
third specimen is 53.884 MPa. To the increase the volume fraction
above 16%, the flexural strength decrease with the lowest value at
the volume fraction of 20% HGM. With composite cured
temperature at 90°C for 24 hours having the highest flexural
strength, this is because of the composite which cured at high
temperatures have more ties crosslink and interface bond is
stronger so that the flexural strength in composite will increase.
