Abstract

Indonesia’s shoreline stretched for 99,093km and its ocean wave has a power of 1,200MW. Nusa Penida Island is one of the locations which possess such energy. However, as a developing tourism center, the island needs an alternative source of electricity. Therefore the island is being researched to determine its wave energy potency and the exact suitable location of converter device installation. Particularly, this study researched the potency on the southern part of the island since this area fits the criteria of the converter device; with a depth of 10-20m within 300m from the shore. This study used oscillating wave surge (OWS) for the converter device and wind & wave data from the year 2013-2017. The research is focused further on determining the potency in Desa Batumadeg, Desa Batukandik and Desa Sekartaji. Result shows that Desa Batumadeg is the most suitable location for the conversion device’s installation even though this village only has an average wave power of 10.72kW/m at 20m deep compared to 12.67kW/m generated in Desa Sekartaji at the same depth. Desa Batumadeg is the nearest zone with the available electricity network, thus the generated electricity can be used directly by nearby residents. Considering minimum wave height requirement of OWS is 1m, based on 5 years data, 69.56% of waves at Zone B can activate the device and be converted into electrical energy.
