Abstract

Concrete is main material used in any building construction, so the using of concrete is increasing and research about concrete is needed to improve concrete quality. One of the important thing need to be studied is water retention or suction that in soil well known as matric suction.
This study describes the method of concrete water retention measurement using filter paper Whatman No.42 with Water Cement Ratio (WCR) 0.5 and 0.6. The results of water retention measurement compared with saturated salt solutions method in a dessicator. Solution of saturated salt used were NaCl, KCl, and H2SO4.
This study showed that for water content 1,835% the water retention was 728.426 kPa; and for water retention 186,2%, water retention was 1,324 kPa. The result of water retention measurement using filter paper Whatman No.42 had suitability with the graph of water retention using saturated salt in dessicator up to 87,14% especially for water retention range 2.000 – 800.000 kPa. It showed that the calculation of water retention using filter paper Whatman No.42 can be applied to concrete, so that it will take less time and cost than saturated salt in dessicator.
Beside that, there were also test of porosity, UPV, compressive strength, and permeability that each used four specimens. The results of the test showed that water retention was directly proportional to wave propagation and compressive strength. This means that if the value of water retention is higher, so wave velocity and compressive strength are higher too. Conversely, water retention was inversely proportional to pore content, water content, and permeability.
