Abstract

High municipal solid waste (MSW) generation can be used to substitute fossil energy. MSW is converted into pellets so that the gasifier feeding is consistent because of its size and shape. Gasification technology is a technology that can be used to convert MSW into a gas that can be used for combustion in diesel engines and electricity generation. The type of gasifier used for the MSW gasification process is a type of multi-stage downdraft. Then one of the improvements in the gasification process is by heating the air entering the gasifier.
This study was carried out by experimental and numerical methods. The experiment was carried out by adding an external air heater to multi-stage air input. The inlet air temperature of the pyrolysis, oxidation and reduction zones were varied with five variations, namely 80 oC (existing), 110 oC, 150 oC, 180 oC, and 210 oC. In addition, numerical simulations were carried out to determine the temperature and gas composition details in each zone that were not measured during the experiment. Gambit 2.4.6 software is used for making 3D and mesh models, ANSYS Fluent 15.1 is used for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
The results obtained from this study are that the highest oxidation temperature is 969 ºC at an air temperature of 210 ºC. The composition of syn-gas (CO, H2, and CH4) at an increase in temperature of 80-210 ºC increased from 21.4%, 9.99%, and 1.775% to 22.79%, 10.28%, and 1.78% . Then increase the LHV and syngas production rate by 0.2 MJ/m3 and 5.92 L/min respectively. Cold gas efficiency increased by 4.75% (from 69.43% to 74.19%), and system efficiency increased by 3.05%. The lowest tar content is 34.39 mg / Nm3. Based on numerical simulations, an increase in air pressure can increase the composition of CO in the pyrolysis and reduction zones by 0.42% and 2.94%, the composition of H2 in the oxidation zone and reduction by 0.39% and 0.69%. CH4 increases in the pyrolysis zone by 0.22%.
