Abstract

The use of plastic continues to increase with the development of technology, industry, economy and population. Increased use of plastic has an impact on the increase in waste produced. Waste management with an incineration system can reduce the volume of waste by more than 90% in a short time, and produce heat energy which can be utilized further. Pyrolysis is a technology that can convert biomass and plastic into energy. Pyrolysis requires a large amount of energy in the combustion process, so pyrolysis requires large costs in the processing process. This study aims to examine the use of heat energy incinerators for the pyrolysis process of plastic waste.
This research used an integrated pyrolysis reactor and incinerator. The pyrolysis reactor was located in an incinerator with dimensions of 15 cm x 15 cm x 25 cm, while the dimensions of the incinerator combustion chamber was 45 cm x 45 cm x 50 cm. Pyrolysis uses PP, PET and LDPE plastic waste with the treatment of each type of plastic weighing 300 g. Incinerator used 1,000 g of LDPE plastic waste. Pyrolysis gas was recirculated and non-recirculated into the incinerator combustion chamber to determine the effect on changes in incinerator temperature. The test parameters in this study were incinerator combustion temperature, pyrolysis combustion temperature and pyrolysis product.
The results obtained the temperature of the incinerator combustion chamber increased fluctuatively with the combustion chamber temperature reaching 739.4 0C. the highest temperature in the pyrolysis combustion chamber reached 433.3 0C. Pyrolysis products with the best solid residues were obtained at optimum heating time of 120 minutes. Products of PP pyrolysis in this heating time were 70.3% oil, 29.7% gas, and 0% solid residues. Accordingly, pyrolysis of PET resulted in 77.3% gas, 16% solid residues, and 6.7% oil. Whereas, products from pyrolysis were 70.7% gas, 26.7% solid residues, and 2.7% oil.
