Abstract

The most popular storage appliance to maintain the quality of fish that is usually used in traditional fishing boats is usually in the form of coolers or coolboxes made of Styrofoam material. In its use, Styrofoam still has shortcomings, which are harmful to consumer’s health and the environment as a waste. So it is necessary to make an effort to reduce the use of Styrofoam by reducing the use of Styrofoam as a cooler and replacing the insulation material into environmentally friendly natural materials. This research modifies the insulance of material by utilizing a mixture of teak wood sawdust (Tectona grandis L.f.) with bagasse fiber (Saccharum officinarum). To improve the mechanical properties of fibers and reduce the value of thermal conductivity of fiber a special treatment is needed by immersing fibers into an alkaline solution of NaOH. The most optimal test and analysis results were obtained by composing 50% teak wood sawdust and 50% bagasse fiber by immersing into alkali NaOH solution a level of 15%. The obtained conductivity value is 0.2907 W/mK, the density is 0.4901 gram / cm3. Experiments on changes in temperature of ice, fish, and coolbox chamber as well as experiments on the length of fish preservation in the coolbox with variations in the composition of straight fibers have better performance compared to the variation of random fiber which is able to preserve fish for 34 hours with a minimum temperature of 0, 2 °C.
