Abstract

================================================================================================
The Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention requires each vessel to have a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), which the functions is to control and to treat ballast water and also to kill the species carried by the ballast water. One method is to use filters with crumb rubber filter elements. This study aims to do filter modeling with crumb rubber and find out the technical specifications. The method used in this research is modelling with Solidwork and simulation using Numeca. This research was implemented on vessels with a size of 17.500 DWT. Based on the results of calculations that have been made, the dimensions of the filter model are obtained, namely 1.4 meters of length, 0.4 meter diameter, 0.5024 m2 surface area, and 0.703 m3 volume. On the simulation process using Numeca, the model is varied based on the density of crumb rubber. Model 1 with a total of 2.928 crumb rubber grains, a total mass of 171.37 kg and a total volume of 0.517 m3. Model 2 with a total of 3.660 crumb rubber grains, a total mass of 214.22 kg and a total volume of 0.646 m3. So that the value of the pressure drop is 4.808% in model 1 and 7.3% in model 2 from the initial pressure. The flow velocity drop by 23% in model 1 and 41.6% in model 2 from the initial velocity. Energy loss or head requirement is 2.4356 meters in model 1 and 2.989 meters in model 2.
