Abstract

Bacillus S1 and Azotobacter S8 are heavy metal resistant
bacteria. They are potentially used as bio-sorbent and bioaccumulator
for bio-remediating chromium pollution. The purpose
of this study was to determine the heavy metal removal ability of
Azotobacter S8 and Bacillus S1, and the influence of salinity on
the trivalent chromium removal efficiency.
Bacterial isolates used are Bacillus S1 and Azotobacter
S8 which taken from Laboratory of Microbiology and
Biotechnology, Department of Biological Science ITS collections.
Bacillus S1 is bacteria which isolated from Kalimas, Surabaya.
Bacterial growth was analyzed by measuring Optical Dencity
(OD) using spectrophotometer method to make the growth curve.
Total trivalent chromium sorption was analyzed using Atomic
Absorption Spectrofotometer (AAS) method at the beginning,
middle and end of bio-sorption test. Parameters analyzed in this
study were OD, temperature, pH, amount of bacterial colonies
(CFU/mL), bacterial dry weight and total chromium. The initial
concentrations of chromium given are 50 mg/L, 75 mg/L and 100
mg/L as trivalent chromium. Concentration of salinity was given to
the isolates as variation and the chromium sorption was analyzed
to determine the influence of salinity on the chromium removal
efficiency.
Based on this study, Azotobacter S8 can remove trivalent
chromium (Cr3+) up to 46.95%, while Bacillus S1 reaches 42.96%
on the Tanpa-salinity conditions with initial trivalent chromium
concentration of 50 mg/L.
Salinity has no influence on the chromium removal.
