Abstract

Identification of biomarker from aromatic hydrocarbon and aliphatic hydrocarbon of sample Muaraenim Coal Bed Methane (CBM-3), Rambutan Field, South Sumatra Basin has been conducted to determine the kerogen potential (gas prone or oil prone) and its carbon cycle. The type of bimodal n-alkane distribution and the presence of naphthalene derivative indicates high source of plant organic matter from Angiosperms and algae or bacteria. The Pr/Ph ratio = 7.78 and Ts / Tm = 0.21 shows the oxidation deposition environment. The presence of unsaturated compounds of sterene, hopanoid and oleanoids and also CPI = 4.42 in CBM-3, indicate sample is immature coal. The high abundance of 2-MP compounds in the sample and MPI = 0.99, shows that CBM-3 analyzed belongs to type III kerogen which tends to produce gas (prone gas). Low maturity indicates that gas is formed at the diagenetic stage through a short carbon cycle.
