Abstract

Low carbon steel, including AISI 1020, is one type of steel which is widely used in industrial and everyday life, for example for components of electric poles, gears, nuts, vehicle frames, and also in shipping. Coating on steel is widely applied to increase the magnificence and gives protection to workpieces from environmental threats which can cause corrosion. One of the coating methods is electroplating, it is the placement of other metals on the surface of the workpiece which will be protected by adding chemicals and electrical current. Zinc is one of the metals which is often used for coat steel with electroplating methods because it gives anodic protection, high availability and it is relatively cheap. This paper analyze the variation of the concentration of ZnCl2 (40; 55; 70 gr / liter) and KCl (155; 175; 195 gr / liter) which compose the Zinc Chloride Acid electrolyte solution used in the zinc electroplating process. The specimens’ coating thickness were tested use Dry Film Thickness apparatus, then the coating’s adhesive strength was tested using the pull-off test method using the PosiTest AT-M Adhesion Tester apparatus, then the specimens’ corrosion rate were tested using the weight loss method using the immersion corrosion testing of metals and the structure of the coated specimen’s surface is seen using the Scanning Electron Microscope. The results showed that the addition of concentrations of ZnCl2 and KCl in the Zinc Chloride Acid electrolyte solution increased the thickness of the coating layer with a maximum thickness of 35.83 ±0.25 µm but it also lowered the coating adhesive strength with a maximum adhesive strength value of 15.34 ±0.01 MPa. In addition, the addition of concentrations of ZnCl2 and KCl in the Zinc Chloride Acid electrolyte solution also reduced the corrosion rate value in the specimens with the lowest corrosion rate of 0.014087 ±0.0034 mmpy.
