Abstract

ASTM A36 steel is a low-carbon steel containing approximately 0.25–0.30% carbon and is widely used in the maritime industry, particularly in shipbuilding. However, its relatively low carbon content makes it susceptible to corrosion, especially in aggressive marine environments such as seawater. One of the most common methods for controlling corrosion is the application of protective coatings. This study investigates the effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) addition to an epoxy coating and coating thickness on the adhesion strength and predicted corrosion rate of ASTM A36 steel. Zinc oxide was incorporated into the epoxy coating at concentrations of 0%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, while coating thicknesses of 150 μm, 250 μm, and 350 μm were evaluated. Adhesion strength was measured using the pull-off test, with the highest adhesion value of 17.15 MPa obtained for the coating containing 0% ZnO at a thickness of 150 μm. Corrosion performance was assessed using the three-electrode electrochemical cell method. The results indicate that the coating containing 40% ZnO with a thickness of 350 μm exhibited the lowest predicted corrosion rate of 0.000797 mm/year (mmpy), demonstrating the highest corrosion resistance among the tested specimens. These findings indicate that increasing both the ZnO content and coating thickness significantly enhances the corrosion protection performance of epoxy-coated ASTM A36 steel.
