Abstract

Penyakit tulang belakang merupakan penyakit umum dalam dunia kesehatan. Penyakit ini tidak bisa dicegah karena cakram tulang belakang (Intervertebral Disc) merupakan jaringan yang akan terdegradasi seiring bertambahnya usia. Pengobatan pembedahan untuk degenerasi tidak bersifat menyembuhkan dan hanya bertindak untuk meringankan gejala neurologis yang dihasilkan dari penyusutan IVD serta membutuhkan biaya yang mahal sehingga diperlukan penelitian untuk menemukan metode baru yang lebih cepat, lebih mudah, dan lebih terjangkau untuk pengobatan ini. Hidrogel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) merupakan material yang biasa digunakan untuk implan nucleus pulposus, bagian inti dari intervertebral disc, karena sifat biokompabilitasnya serta kemampuan untuk menahan air. Disamping itu, silicone rubber memiliki elastic modulus yang mampu menahan tekanan. Pada penelitian ini telah disintesis room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber / PVA, serta menganalisa pengaruh penambahan hidrogel PVA terhadap sifat fisik dan mekanik. Hasil penelitian diuji FTIR untuk melihat senyawa, equilibrium water content dan curing time untuk mengetahui kandungan air dan waktu komposit mengalami curing, injectable ability untuk mengetahui kemampuan material di inject dan membentuk cetakan dengan sempurna, uji tarik dan uji tekan untuk mengetahui kekuatan mekanik. Dari hasil pengujian didapatkan bahwa penambahan PVA menyebabkan kenaikan persentase water content dimana jumlah water content paling besar memiliki nilai 5% dan penurunan pada curing time dimana waktu yang paling cepat memiliki nilai 68 menit. Disamping itu juga menyebabkan penurunan pada kekuatan tarik hingga 0.58 MPa dan kekuatan tekan hingga 0.96 MPa, serta mempunyai young modulus sebesar 0.23 – 0.30 MPa. Berdasarkan data yang didapatkan dari penelitian ditemukan bahwa RTV silicone rubber / PVA mampu menjadi kandidat material alternatif pengganti bantalan tulang belakang.

Spinal disease is a common disease in the world of health. This disease could not be prevented due to the tissue that will be degraded along with age. Surgical treatment for degeneration is only acts to relieve neurological symptoms that result from shrinking IVD but also cost a lot. Hence, research is needed to find new methods that are faster, easier, and more affordable for this treatment. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel is a common material used for replacement of nucleus pulposus, the core part of intervertebral discs, due to its biocompatibility and ability to retain water. Besides that, silicone rubber has elastic modulus that can withstand pressure. In this research, room temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber / PVA has been synthesized and analyzed. The effect of PVA hydrogels addition to physical and mechanical properties were performed. FTIR is conducted to see the functional group in the sample, equilibrium water content and curing time to determine the water content and time of composite curing, injectable ability to evaluate the ability of material to be injected and formed the mold perfectly, tension and compression test to determine the mechanical strength. It has been found that the addition of PVA causes an increase in the percentage of water content, where the largest amount of water content is 5% and also a decrease in curing time with the fastest time in 68 minutes. Besides that, it also causes a decrease in tensile strength up to 0.58 MPa and compressive strength up to 0.96 MPa, and has a young modulus of 0.23 - 0.30 MPa. Interestingly enough, the results obtained from this research found suitable to make RTV silicone rubber / PVA as alternative material candidate for replacement of rear bone bearing.
