Abstract

Monitoring of post-stroke patients is essential for evaluating brain activity during the rehabilitation period. Electroencephalography (EEG) provides a more objective and measurable approach for this purpose. One of the main challenges in EEG-based monitoring is identifying the most appropriate parameters for assessing rehabilitation progress. Most previous studies have focused on evaluating selected parameters under a single stroke condition, either hemiparesis or hemiplegia. Therefore, this study adopts a more comprehensive approach by not only evaluating selected EEG parameters but also identifying the most stable features, frequency bands, movement types, and the relationship between stroke conditions and EEG feature values. Healthy hand movements (GTS) were compared with affected hand movements (GTT) in post-stroke patients using various EEG features across different frequency bands and motor tasks. Brain activity was recorded from 10 respondents using two EEG electrodes (C3 and C4) while performing three active motor tasks: grasping, elbow flexion–extension, and shoulder flexion–extension. The Artifact Subspace Reconstruction (ASR) method was applied to remove noise artifacts from the EEG signals. The processed EEG data were then separated into three frequency bands: alpha, low beta, and high beta. Feature extraction was performed using both time-domain and frequency-domain features. Individual analysis was conducted to determine the differences between GTS and GTT for each feature, frequency band, and movement. The results showed that the Power Spectral Density (PSD) feature in the alpha frequency band during grasping movements provided the clearest distinction between GTS and GTT. In addition, stroke severity was found to be linearly proportional to the extracted feature values. When the parameters identified through the individual analysis were applied to a decision tree classifier, the model achieved an accuracy of 100%. These findings indicate that the PSD feature in the alpha frequency band is a reliable parameter for monitoring post-stroke rehabilitation using EEG.
