Abstract

Abstract—High Frequency (HF) communication systems, as an emergency telecommunication technology, can reach isolated disaster-affected regions over long distances through ionospheric reflections. Indonesia, as an archipelagic country stretching from Sabang to Merauke, presents geographical conditions that make HF communication systems a viable alternative for emergency communications. However, HF communication systems suffer from limited bandwidth, resulting in low channel capacity. The use of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas at both the transmitter and receiver can improve channel availability and increase channel capacity. This paper presents 2×2 MIMO channel response measurements over a 3,044 km communication link. The results are used to investigate the Capacity Improvement Factor (CIF) by comparing the capacities of Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) and MIMO systems. The measurement results show that the CIF ranges from 0.83 to 1.87 times, demonstrating the potential of MIMO techniques to enhance the capacity of HF communication systems.
