Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelago surrounded by the Eurasian Plate, the Indo-Australian Plate, the Philippine Sea Plate, and the Pacific Plate. Interaction between these plates is causing Indonesia to be prone to earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. Surabaya City is the capital of East Java Province as well as the second largest metropolitan city in Indonesia. One of the disaster threats in the Surabaya City came from the Kendeng fault which could cause an earthquake. One of the first steps in earthquake disaster mitigation that can be done is to analyze the potential of earthquakes in the region. To analyze the potential of earthquakes in an area can be done by observing deformation using Global Positioning System (GPS) data. From the results and analysis of GPS data processing, the values of shift velocity and strain are obtained. The horizontal shift of the dominant GPS observation points towards the southeast with a range of values of shifting speeds between 1.034 cm/year to 5.674 cm/year. In vertical shifts, points other than BM23, BM29, and BM24 experience subsidence with a range of displacement velocities between -0.190 cm/year to -5.769 cm/year. The resulting strain calculation extension level in the city of Surabaya ranges from 0.012 to 8.697 μstrain and the level of compression with a range of values between 0.190 to 11.950 μstrain. So it can be concluded that Surabaya City has the potential for earthquakes to watch out for, especially from the West Surabaya region due to fault activity and is dominated by a greater compression level than other regions.
