Abstract

Dengan cepatnya perkembangan industri stainless steel, permintaan nikel meningkat dari tahun ke tahun. Karena bijih nikel sulfida dengan kadar tinggi semakin menipis, maka sangat mendesak untuk menggunakan nikel laterit dengan kadar rendah yang menyumbang 72% dari total cadangan nikel. Salah satu proses alternatif yang kini dikembangkan yakni sintering-blast furnace sehingga menghasilkan feronikel. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan sintering bijih nikel laterit menggunakan bahan bakar arang dan fluks limestone yang akan menghasilkan produk sinter. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa pengaruh variasi ukuran arang terhadap kadar Ni, kandungan senyawa, kekuatan dan perolehan sinter. Penelitian ini dilakukan mulai dari perhitungan kebutuhan arang dan limestone menggunakan neraca massa dan neraca panas. Feed material dimasukkan dalam furnace, lalu dipanaskan hingga temperatur 1200°C dengan waktu proses sintering selama 4 jam, kemudian ukuran arang divariasikan pada proses sintering. Selanjutnya dilakukan perhitungan perolehan sinter dan pengujian EDX, XRD serta Drop Test untuk mengetahui kadar Ni, kandungan senyawa dalam sinter dan kekuatan sinter. Dari hasil penelitian, kadar Ni tertinggi didapatkan pada variasi ukuran arang 11-30 mm sebesar 3,19%. Kekuatan dan perolehan sinter tertinggi juga didapatkan pada variasi ukuran arang 11-30 mm sebesar 69,11% dan 69,07%. Senyawa mayor yang terbentuk pada sinter dengan variasi ukuran arang 11-30 mm adalah senyawa diopside.

With the development of the stainless steel industry, the nickel demands are increasing year by year. As high grade nickel sulfide ores is depleting, it is urgent to utilize low grade nickel laterite ores that accounts for 72% of total nickel reserves. One of the alternative process being developed now is sintering-blast furnace process which produces ferronickel. This research was conducted by sintering laterite nickel ore using charcoal as fuel and limestone as flux that will produces sinter. The objectives of this research are to analyze the effect of charcoal size variation to the Ni content, compounds, sinter strength and yield strength. This research started with calculate the demands of charcoal and limestone using mass balance and heat balance. Feed materials are fed in furnace, heated at temperature of 1200oC with 4 hours sintering process time, then varied charcoal size added to sintering process. Next, sinter yield is calculated. EDX, XRD and Drop Test were also performed to determine Ni content, sinter compounds and strength. From the result of this research, the highest Ni content obtained by varied charcoal size 11-30 mm which was 3,19%. The highest sinter strength and yield sinter also obtained by varied charcoal size 11-30 mm which were 69.11% and 69.07%. Mayor compounds which formed on sinter with varied charcoal size 11-30 mm was diopside compounds.
