Abstract

The effect of ratio of water and ethanol volume to the formation of calcium carbonate crystalline phase was studied by the synthesis of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) using solution route method. PCC was synthesized using limestone taken from Tuwiri Wetan village, Tuban. The CaCl2 solutions with the ethanol addition were mixed with Na2CO3 solution at room temperature. The variation of concentration of reactan are 0,25, 0,5 and 0,75 Molar, while the variation of the ratio of water volume in CaCl2 solution to the ethanol volume are 1/1, 1/3, and 1/5. The resulted powders were filtered, washed and then dried in the air for 24 hours. The XRD characterization was used to analyze the crystalline phase formation, while SEM was used to observe the particles morphology. The results show that variation of concentration of reactan and the ratio of water volume in CaCl2 solution to the ethanol volume affected the phase formation and morphology. Increase in ratio of water volume in CaCl2 solution to the ethanol volume tends to decrease the calcite phase but increase the aragonite and vaterite phase at higher concentration of reactan that is 0,5 and 0,75 Molar. Calcite, aragonite, and vaterite phase are formed at all treatment variation with each morphology are rhombic, needle-like and spherical.
