Abstract

The problem that occurs in Indonesia is that sugar consumption is greater than its production which causes the inability of the sugar industry to meet the demands of all consumers. One of the problems that occurs is due to the large number of imported raw materials including flocculants used in this case, namely anionic polyacrylamide flocculants. Anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) was first developed in the world through an alkali hydrolysis process. Until now, APAM synthesis technology has undergone many developments. However, there is still little research on anionic poly-acrylamide regarding the effect of polymer properties and the efficiency of their use in the sugar refining process, so that further research on the characteristics of flocculants is carried out to reduce costs in the sugar production process. In this study poly synthesis (sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) was carried out as a flocculant which will be used in the sugar refining process. The steps used are adding acrylic acid, acrylamide and sodium carbonate which are then added with NaOH solution. The next step is the synthesis of poly (sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) which is carried out with a nitrogen atmosphere for 3.5 hours which was previously added to ammonium persulfate. This study was conducted on 7 comparisons of the concentration of acrylic acid and acrylamide, namely 0: 100, 20:80, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, 80:20, 100: 0. The resulting flocculants will then be tested for flocculant FTIR, flocculant SEM test, settling speed test, pH test, TDS test, turbidity test for sugar sap to determine the effect of the addition of flocculant. In the experiments conducted, the most optimal gelatin results obtained were the most optimal flocculants of poly (sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) results obtained in a 50:50 comparison with a dose obtained at 6 ppm, estimated speed of 3,333 ml / minute, pH value is 7.19, TDS value is 520 ppm, turbidity value is 34.5 NTU.
