Abstract

Surabaya with a population density of 8.463 people per km2 produces 8.25% plastic waste in 2016. This research was conducted on Gunung Sari until Jagir segment. All of these segments are densely populated settlements. Due to the government’s limitations in managing waste, 2.9% of waste is wasted into rivers. One type of waste that is often found is plastic waste which is divided into macroplastic, mesoplastic (MeP), and microplastic (MP). This study aims to (1) determine meso- and microplastic abundance, (2) determine the characteristics including shape, size, colour, and type of meso- and microplastic, and (3) determine the vertical and horizontal distribution of meso- and microplastic in Surabaya River on Gunung Sari to Jagir segment. Sampling was conducted by grab sampling on the water surface, middle, and bottom in the right, middle, and left position of the river. Repetition was done twice. Total of 54 samples were obtained from 3 sampling locations. Collection of meso- and microplastic samples was done using manta trawl and extracted with hydrogen peroxide and FeSO4.7H2O as catalyst. Samples are then separated based on the density with the help of NaCl to later be identified based on their visual characteristics. The polimer type was analysed using FTIR. Abundance of meso- and microplastic in Gunung Sari was of 15.9 items/m3, in Joyoboyo 56.2 items/m3, and in Jagir 58.1 items/m3. Meso- and microplastics in the shape of film dominated the right and left positions of the river in Gunung Sari segment, in the middle depth. Large microplastics (LMP) were mostly found on the surface water of Gunung Sari (4.7 items/m3). In Joyoboyo, LMPs were most often found in the middle depth (16.9 items/m3). However, in Jagir, particles were dominantly consist of SMP in the bottom (22.1 items/m3). The dominating colour of meso- and microplastic was transparant with the highest number of average located in Jagir segment. From 30 samples, 16 samples of the highest number in shapes and colours were chosen. The polymers obtained were low density polyethylene (LDPE), polystrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PP dominates on the water surface meanwhile on the half depth and water depth, LDPE was the dominant polymer.
