Abstract

Adhesive joint is one of alternative fasteners that can be used on structures beside mechanical fasteners such as welding, riveting, brazing, and soldering. Adhesive joint has an advantage compared to other mechanical joints, which is the ability to join different type of materials. This advantage makes it possible to build a light vehicle structure using lighter materials compared to steel. In the application, adhesive joint must be able to resist dynamic loading on vehicle structure. Adhesive joint’s characteristic of stiffness is very important to ensure the safety, reliability, and comfort of structure subjected to impact loading. In this final project, the effect of adhesive thickness on scarf adhesive joint stiffness subjected to impact loading will be investigated. The adhesive thickness to be inspected are 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 mm. Split Hopkinson pressure bar is used as a dynamic characterization device for scarf adhesive joint. Strain waves that propagate in pressure bars in the form of incident pulses, reflected pulse, and transmitted pulse will be obtained from testing. The signals obtained are then used to obtain the stress-strain curve of scarf adhesive joint. The stiffness of scarf adhesive joint is obtained by calculating the slope of the stress-strain curve obtained.
Testing of scarf adhesive joints were carried out at a consistent strain rate of 550±30 s-1. The results obtained showed that testing of scarf adhesive joints were carried out in the elastic area, where scarf adhesive joints was compressed and then experienced expansion. At the beginning of the stress-strain curve (loading phase), scarf adhesive joints undergo elastic deformation where the value of stress is proportional to the value of strain. After reaching the maximum stress value, scarf adhesive joints undergo an unloading phase, where the value of stress decreases to 0 MPa. The stiffness of scarf adhesive joints is obtained by calculating the initial slope of the stress-strain curve. The results obtained indicate that adhesive thickness affects the stiffness of scarf adhesive joint. The stiffness of scarf adhesive joint increases linearly with the increasing of adhesive in the range of 0.5 to 3 mm. The results of this study will be very useful to determine the performance of scarf adhesive joint in applications where joints experience impact loading, for example in automotive construction.
