Abstract

Unmanned aircrafts are now increasingly in demand due to their advantages compared to manned aircrafts. This development faces a number of challenges. UAV class Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE), specifically, is designed to be able to fly in a long time so that it requires economical fuel consumption. This can be achieved by increasing the lift-to-drag ratio (CL/CD) in the operating conditions. CL/CD is optimized by the wings configuration such as selecting the right airfoil and adding lift enhancement. NLF(1)-0215f airfoil, designed by Dan Somers, can maintain laminar flow up to 50% of the chord length in smooth surface conditions. Gurney flaps are small pieces of sheet under the trailing edge of the wing that can increase the lift force so that the lift-to-drag ratio may be increased. This study analyzes numerically the effects of Gurney flap on three dimension flow characteristics of the wing with NLF(1)-0215f airfoil. This research is conducted numerically using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with Ansys Fluent software. This study reviews four parameters: pressure coefficient (Cp), lift coefficient (CL), drag coefficient (CD), and lift-to-drag ratio (CL/CD). This study also evaluates the visualization of the contours of velocity and pressure, streamline, separation, tip vortex, and trailing vortex on a wing. The simulation is conducted in three-dimensional (3D). The model used in this simulation is the NLF(1)-0215f airfoil wing, without and with Gurney flap. The simulation is carried out with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model at the Reynolds number (Re) of 3x106. The free stream velocity is 34 m/s and the variations carried out are the Gurney flap height (h) of 0,01c and 0,0175c and angle of attack (α) of 0o, 4o, 8o, 12o, and 16o.
The results of this study prove that Gurney flap is able to increase CL from the NLF(1)-0215f airfoil wing. However, CL/CD affected by Gurney flap drops. The effect of Gurney flap is felt especially on the trailing edge where a high-pressure region is placed in front of the flap. That region increases the pressure which has an impact on increasing positive Cp value on the lower wing surface. The Gurney flap also creates a trailing vortex that can bend the flow over the wing downward. The vortex can come out through the tip and increase the intensity of the tip vortex leaving the wing.
