Abstract

An organic geochemistry study on a sample of Coal Bed Methane (CBM-4) located at Muara Enim Coal Mine has been carried out. Biomarker analysis was carried out through extraction and fractionation methods, and identification of compound structures using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) instruments. Biomarker identification indicate the presence of n-alkana (n-C16-n-C33) with n-C31 the highest abundance compound an indicator of organic compounds derived from high terrestrial plants. The ratio of Pr/Ph = 7.87 shows the oxidation deposition environment. The CPI value = 4.35 and the C31αβS/(S+R) ratio = 0.14, indicating the low maturity of the CBM-4 analyzed. The low maturity of the sample shows that methane gas trapped in coal (CBM-4) is formed through a short carbon cycle at the diagenesis stage. The presence of methylphenantrene and several other biomarkers as plant indicators of high levels of Angiosperms show that CBM-4 samples tend to produce gas.
