Abstract

The City of Jayapura, as the capital city and the center of government and economic activities in Papua Province, has experienced very rapid development, marked by the increasing construction of facilities and infrastructure. This development has brought both positive and negative impacts to the people of Jayapura. Flooding is one of the most frequent problems occurring in urban areas due to rapid economic growth and development. Floods are caused by changes in land use that reduce water catchment areas, resulting in increased surface runoff. The depth of inundation reaches approximately ±50 cm over a wide area. Flooding generally occurs along the main roads and roadsides adjacent to the city drainage channels. The method used in this study involves reducing flood discharge by evaluating the capacity of the existing drainage channels, analyzing design flood discharge with a 10-year return period, analyzing domestic wastewater discharge based on projected population growth over the next 10 years without considering wastewater quality, and reducing flood discharge through land conservation using a technical approach in the form of constructing a retention pond. This study aims to determine the capability of the drainage network system in the inundated areas of Abepura District under a 10-year return period rainfall event and to analyze the application of environmentally friendly drainage systems for flood mitigation in Abepura District. The results of the design discharge analysis indicate that the 10-year return period rainfall for Abepura District until 2028 is 191.69 mm/24 hours. Evaluation of the drainage system on a total of 105 channels in Abepura District showed that 33 channels do not have sufficient capacity to accommodate the design discharge. Therefore, a retention pond is required to store runoff from drainage channels that exceed their capacity. It is expected that the implementation of this study will reduce the potential for flooding in Abepura District.
