Abstract

There are many challenge to produce a good 3D-Print filament. One of the main criterion of a good 3D-print filament is having a diameter tolerance up to ±0,05mm. A good and consistent extrusion process needed to produce 3D-Print filament with that tolerance. The most influential component of the extrusion machine for this process is the extrusion screw. So it is very important to do design evaluation to the screw component in the filament extrusion machine. In this study, screw design modification on filament extrusion machines was carried out on the CV. Robries Indonesia. Screw design is intended to overcome fluctuations in filament diameter. Polymer material used in the production process of this filament is polypropylene (PP). In this study, the temperature and electric current of the driving motor were first observed in the filament production process to determine systemic fluctuations due to the phenomenon of surging. Furthermore, to overcome filament fluctuations due to imperfections in the mixing process, modification of screw design was carried out by adding Maddock mixers to screw components. Variations made on the design of the Maddock mixer are used by changing the undercut depth in the Maddock mixer. Observation of the filament diameter was carried out through direct measurement with a vernier caliper and macro observation. Through this research it is known that the addition of Maddock mixer to the screw does not result in an improvement in the quality of the diameter of the filament produced. Meanwhile, variations in the undercut depth on Maddock mixer affect the extrusion temperature and extrusion speed rate.
