Abstract

Surface grinding is a machining process that uses abrasive particles in the form of a high-speed grinding wheel to remove material from the surface of a workpiece. This study aimed to determine the optimum combination of process parameters while minimizing the response variables of x-axis vibration, z-axis vibration, and surface roughness. The experimental design employed the Taguchi method with an L32 (2¹ × 4²) orthogonal array integrated with the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method to optimize multiple response characteristics simultaneously. The process variables investigated were cross feed (CF) of 5 and 15 mm/stroke, tangential speed (TS) of 11, 92, 173, and 256 mm/s, and wheel speed (WS) of 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 rpm. The experimental results showed that the contributions of the process parameters in reducing the overall response variation were 37.17% for cross feed, 29.94% for tangential speed, and 20.90% for wheel speed. The optimization results, validated through confirmation experiments, indicated that the optimum process parameter combination consisted of a cross feed of 5 mm/stroke, a tangential speed of 11 mm/s, and a wheel speed of 3000 rpm.
