Abstract

A floating breakwater is a type of coastal protection structure designed to reduce wave energy before it reaches the shoreline, thereby minimizing coastal erosion. In recent years, floating breakwaters have gained increasing attention because they offer greater flexibility, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness than conventional fixed breakwaters, particularly in areas with relatively small wave heights, poor seabed conditions, and deep water. This study investigates the hydraulic performance of a porous saw-type floating breakwater through physical model testing under three water depths: 35 cm, 40 cm, and 45 cm. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of wave transmission coefficient ((K_t)) and wave reflection coefficient ((K_r)), and subsequently compared with those of a conventional pontoon-type floating breakwater. The results indicate that increasing water depth reduces the wave transmission coefficient of the porous saw-type breakwater. At a water depth of 45 cm, the average (K_t) value was 3.43% lower than that at a depth of 35 cm and 2.20% lower than that at a depth of 40 cm. Conversely, the average wave reflection coefficient ((K_r)) at a depth of 45 cm was 11.4% higher than that at 35 cm and 5.4% higher than that at 40 cm. When compared with the pontoon-type breakwater, the porous saw-type exhibited average (K_t) values that were 6.12%, 5.61%, and 5.39% higher at water depths of 35 cm, 40 cm, and 45 cm, respectively. However, its average (K_r) values were 14.74%, 12.59%, and 9.79% lower than those of the pontoon-type breakwater at the corresponding water depths. These findings provide valuable insights into the hydraulic performance of porous saw-type floating breakwaters for coastal protection applications.
