Abstract

The solid waste management method in Indonesia was still focused on the landfilling method. Solid waste composition in Indonesia was dominated by organic waste. Organic solid waste in Surabaya City occupies the first level, that reaching up to 71,96%. The alternative management of organic waste will be able to reduce the waste load which is enter the landfill. Waste management using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae from the Hermetia illucens species capable of reducing organic waste by 50-85%. Besides, BSF larvae can be harvested and used as animal feed because they can convert waste into nutrients in the body. This study has three objectives, the first objective is to determine the composition ratio of waste with variations in the type of waste that can provide the largest reduction percentage. The second objective is to determine the level of larval growth from each selected variation ratio. The third objective is to determine the physical-chemical characteristics of the decomposition of organic waste carried out by BSF larvae. This research was carried out on a laboratory scale, using BSF larvae aged six days. The types of waste that used was mixtures of fresh food waste with other organic waste types, i.e., immature windrow composting material, windrow compost residue, and fresh cow manure at three different composition ratios. The composition ratio of food waste with the other wastes used was 90:10, 70:30, and 60:40. The results showed that the highest reduction was at the ratio of 90:10 achieved for each component of mixtures waste. Waste reduction in mixtures of food waste and immature windrow composting material (SM:WS) 90:10 was 82,18%. Waste reduction in mixtures of food waste and windrow compost residue (SM:RW) 90:10 was 79%. Waste reduction in mixtures of food waste and cow manure (SM:KS) 90:10 was 74,5%. The converted protein content in type SM:WS (90:10) was 54,6%, SM:RW (90:10) was 63,11% and in SM:KS (90:10) was 48,75%.
