Abstract

Energy is one of the most important aspects used. The main source of energy is fossil fuels. Increased use of fuel causes an increase in the amount of CO2 gas resulting in global warming. Converting CO2 into fuel by a photocatalytic process is one solution to reduce the amount of CO2. The purpose of this study was to analyze variations in irradiation time (120,150,180 minutes), time of flow of carbon dioxide gas (1, 3, and 5 minutes) and composition of rGO to photocatalytic reactions to convert CO2 to methanol. The results of the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) test showed the crystal structure and morphology of the rGO. The ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) linker that binds rGO and CuO is proven in the FTIR test. RGO / CuO composites are able to absorb light which is important in the photocatalytic process as shown in the UV-Vis test results. GCMS test results showed the highest amount of methanol was found in DMF solution containing 5% rGO catalyst - CuO with a variation of irradiation time of 150 minutes at the time of CO2 gas flow for 5 minutes amounting to 6694.9 mmol methanol / gram catalyst. The longer the time of CO2 gas flow, the more methanol produced. The best 5% rGO composition is due to the composition of CuO and rGO as the right composition, as evidenced by the results of XRD and SEM. CuO is bonded well to the rGO layer, so CuO is able to transfer electrons. Electron transfer helps in the process of converting CO2 into methanol, because in the process of converting CO2 to methanol it requires 6 electrons.
