Abstract

Molasses, Stillage and Spent wash are liquid wastes as large production in the bioethanol industry. The liquid wastes contain high sulfur and are dangerous if they are discharge directly into the environment without pretreatment. For this reason, pretreatment is needed to reduce the sulfur concentration. The objective of this research is to eliminate the content of H2S or sulfur in the wastewater of the bioethanol industry by using aerobic bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Pseudomonas putida which are immobilized packing wood chips and bagasse in biofiltration reactor to degraded H2S. The biofiltration process in this study conducted in two steps. The first step was carried out by immobilized bacterial in the reactor to form biofilm for 13 days and the second step of the biofiltration process used wastewater of the bioethanol industry (molasses, stillage, and spent wash) for 30 days. From this study, showed that the best result for degrading sulfur were 30% (v/v) bacteria Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in wood chips packing and 3% (v/v) concentration molasses waste could reduce H2S concentration from 4.35 mg/L to 0.91 mg/L with 79.08% total degradation. The percentage of degradation from stillage and spent wash was lower compared to molasses. It is because the stillage and spent wash contain alcohol (stillage : 242.81 mg/L and spent wash : 263.85 mg/L) which is antiseptic for bacteria.
