Abstract

Modification of gold electrodes using polypyrrole and binahong leaf extract for glucose detection was successfully carried out. The glucose biosensor was prepared by coating the active materials onto the surface of a gold electrode. The active materials used were polypyrrole (Ppy) and binahong leaf extract. Pyrrole polymerization was carried out electrochemically at a potential range of -1.3 to +1.3 V using the cyclic voltammetry method, with a scan rate of 50 mV/s for 30 cycles in a 0.1 M KCl electrolyte solution. The modified gold electrode was subsequently tested by comparing it with an unmodified gold electrode, a polypyrrole-modified gold electrode, and a gold electrode modified with polypyrrole and binahong leaf extract for glucose detection. The comparison was based on the current response produced by an analyte solution with the same concentration of 10 mM at varying pH values of 4, 7, and 10. Based on the measurement results, the electrode modified with polypyrrole and binahong leaf extract was able to detect glucose solution effectively at pH 7. This was demonstrated by the formation of anodic and cathodic peaks in the resulting voltammogram at a potential of 0.16 V, with an oxidation peak current of 2.4 μA. The calibration curve obtained from measurements at various glucose concentrations was used to determine the detection limit and sensitivity of the electrode toward the analyte solution. Based on the calculations, the detection limit and sensitivity of the gold electrode modified with polypyrrole and binahong leaf extract toward glucose, determined from the oxidation peak current response, were 4.41 mM and 0.315 μA mm⁻² mM⁻¹, respectively.
