Abstract

The emergence of social media, and the large number of people using it, has encouraged the government to use social media as a means to disseminate information. The information provided must be beneficial to the public, and its delivery can be monitored to understand public responses to the interactions offered by the government, in order to strengthen Government to Citizen relationships. Classification of local government social media posts can be conducted to determine the types of information provided by the government to the public. Research on the classification of social media posts in case studies of local governments in Indonesia has been successfully conducted; however, the text processing methods used to build the classification model can still be further explored. The text processing methods discussed in this research are term weighting and word embedding. Term weighting and word embedding can identify terms or words that carry meaning within a corpus and can be used to reduce the dataset, thereby producing a new model for the classification process. The classification performance of local government social media posts without applying any text processing method is compared with the application of Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) term weighting, Okapi BM25, and Doc2Vec word embedding for classification using Support Vector Machine and Logistic Regression. The selection of these techniques is based on previous research that has successfully improved classification performance, as well as the implementation of Okapi BM25 term weighting, which has not previously been used to weight terms based on term occurrence and inverse document frequency without relying on relevance information. The purpose of this research is to apply these methods and compare the performance of each applied method. The benefits obtained include understanding the application of term weighting and word embedding techniques to represent text as features for classification, understanding the performance of classification models that apply these techniques, and comparing the performance of each classification model to identify the best method for the case study of classifying local government social media posts in Indonesia. Precision, recall, F1-score, macro-average, micro-average, and AUC measurements were conducted for each model. The results of this research show that the TF-IDF model using Logistic Regression is the most suitable for categorizing tweets according to the case study addressed.
