Abstract

The use of gasoline-ethanol mixture is known to reduce fuel consumption and reduce exhaust gas emissions on motorcycle engines (Rifal and Rauf, 2018) (Utomo et al., 2014). Based on this, the research was conducted with the aim to determine the effect of the type of acid, the type of yeast in the old fermentation on the results of bagasse bioethanol as a mixture of motorcycle fuel. In a lab-scale study hydrolysis was used with sulfuric and hydrochloric acid types, 3 long fermentation variations namely 6, 8, 10 days and using types of bread yeast and tape yeast. The best combination of treatment with ethanol content is used in large-scale production so that the results of bioethanol can be used in testing properties and performance of motorcycle engines.
The results showed that on the lab scale the highest average ethanol content was 7.7%, which was obtained from a combination of sulfuric acid treatment, bread yeast, and 8 days fermentation. On a large scale sugarcane bagasse of 5.7 kg of dried bagasse which has been hydrolyzed produces 8 Brix sugar content. Then using a fermented solution of 19 liters of 8% ethanol yields 811 ml of bioethanol with 95% content with 2 times the distillation. The test results of E50 bioethanol properties are Specific Gravity 0.816, density 816 Kg / m3, kinematic viscosity 0.81 cSt, flash point 29oC. The results of the engine test show that bioethanol treatment machines are more efficient in testing specific fuel consumption, and lower CO emissions are produced.
