Abstract

This study presents a simulation to evaluate the performance of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensors based on the Otto and Kretschmann configurations. SPR is a phenomenon involving the excitation of plasmon waves at the interface between a metal surface and a dielectric medium. This excitation is achieved using a prism, a metal layer, and a dielectric material arranged in either the Otto or Kretschmann configuration. In the Otto configuration, the dielectric layer is positioned between the prism and the metal layer, whereas in the Kretschmann configuration, the metal layer is located between the prism and the dielectric layer. These two configurations are widely employed in prism-based SPR systems. Due to their high accuracy, excellent sensitivity, and capability for real-time monitoring, SPR sensors have become a prominent research topic in sensing applications. The simulation results demonstrate distinct performance differences between the Otto and Kretschmann configurations. Based on the comparison of the metals used, the Otto configuration exhibits a narrower Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), indicating higher measurement accuracy. Furthermore, the SPR simulations were applied to detect the concentrations of sugar and ethanol solutions. The Kretschmann configuration showed superior performance as an ethanol concentration sensor, achieving a sensitivity of 181.958°/RIU, whereas the Otto configuration demonstrated better performance for sugar concentration sensing, with a sensitivity of 167.7156°/RIU.
