Abstract

In the last decades, the diversification program of fuel-based energy into gas fuel has encouraged researchers to explore the potential of new and renewable alternative energy sources in Indonesia. Hydrogen from biomass (known as Biohydrogen) is considered as the future energy because of environmentally friendly and highly energy content characteristic. The sophisticated conversion technology intensively studied is the green hydrolysis processes of subcritical water, enzymatic and fermentation. However, the small conversion and high energy consumption and the formation of side compounds become gaps of research to solve, ensuring the feasibility of this process on industrial scale.
Recently, several studies to enhance the subcritical Water process performance are being intensively developed. Optimizing the operating conditions and the addition of catalyst-like additives in subcritical water are some methods that can be taken to increase the yield of the main product (reducing sugars) and prevent the formation of byproducts (furfural, 5-HMF etc.). The objective of this study is to develop an integrated green process for the conversion of coconut husk waste biomass to biohydrogen by increasing sugar yield, minimizing the degradation product and energy consumption, followed by optimizing the fermentation process.
Severity factor was used to efficiently represent the operating condition of subcritical water process whether temperature and time. The results show that the maximum sugar yield was obtained at mild severity factor. This was confirmed by the degradation of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. It was found that CO2 gave a different tendency of severity factor compared to N2 as the pressurizing gas. The result of SEM analysis confirmed the structural changes during SCW pretreatment. This study integrated three steps all of which are green processes which ensured an environmentally friendly process to produce a clean biohydrogen. Moreover, the addition of Tween gave a significant escalation of sugar yield below the cloud point (around 130 C). On the SDS addition in SCW process, the simultaneous hydrophobic and hydrophilic interaction between lignin and SDS drove the delignification of biomass and solubilization of monomeric sugar. On the contrary, adding PEG showed an adverse effect on the subcritical condition. The combination of SCW assisted by SDS and enzymatic hydrolysis generated the highest sugar yield and the lowest the degradation compound and energy consumption. In this study, the highest hydrogen yield of 0.279 mol/ mol sugar has been successfully produced from coconut husk using the Subcritical Water process at 80 bar, 150 oC and 60 min.
This study integrated three steps all of which are green processes which ensured an environmentally friendly process to produce a clean biohydrogen. Based on this study, the technology of biohydrogen production from coconut husk and other lignocellulosic materials such as rice straw, oil palm and sugarcane bagasse, which are abundant in Indonesia, is a considerable feasible for commercialization.
