Abstract

The development of science and technology, particularly in welding technology today, has been widely used in connecting rods in steel building construction and machine construction. Therefore, knowledge of welding technology is required to achieve compatibility between the desired results and the welding process performed, in order to obtain optimal results. In this thesis, the welding process used is SMAW welding. One type of welded joint that needs to be explored further is the joint with a V groove and double V groove. The selection of groove type is based on the tendency toward more common usage. Furthermore, to determine the joint strength of these two groove forms, the mechanical properties and macrostructure were observed. From the test results, SMAW welding on ASTM 36 steel with a double V groove shape is stronger than the V groove, due to the higher tensile strength values obtained with the double V groove shape. Based on the tensile test results, the tensile stress obtained on the double V groove reaches 40.34 kgf/mm². Based on the macrostructure test results, the HAZ on welding with a V groove is smaller than that with a double V groove. Thus, in this testing, the double V groove weld was obtained as a better result than the V groove. Based on hardness testing performed on ASTM 36 steel with different groove forms, different hardness results were obtained, in which the results of the V groove show lower hardness than the double V groove.
