Abstract

The wastes of shrimp pond have characteristics where the pH, ammonia, phosphorus, BOD5 and TSS are higher, while DO concentration is lower than surrounding waters. Contaminants accumulate in aquatic sediments which cause increasing levels of nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and oxygen depletion and increasing the population of bacteria. Aerobic bio filter by using bio ball media is one of biological wastewater treatment method which is able to reduce pollutants. This research aims to assess and analyze the removal efficiency of BOD5, COD, Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate, and increasing DO effects in shrimp pond waste water going through the biofilter reactor.
This biofilter reactor is designed with varied levels of bioball which are the levels of biofilter media. This reactor is also supported by 48 hours of aeration system and 12 hours of intermittent aeration. High filter media used in the reactor are 30 cm, 40 cm, and 50 cm. These variations are created to compare the efficiency and performance of each aerobic biofilter reactor.
After running the reactor and do the analysis about the effect of levels media variation and aeration system on the first running and the second running of this research, it can be concluded that for tested waste water pollutants parameters including COD, BOD, Ammonia, Nitrate, and Phosphate, it shows no different in media high variation, while there is different in aeration system variation. Meanwhile, for parameter PO43-, the result is that there is no difference for both media high variation and aeration system. For the parameters tested, shrimp pond waste water already met the standard with the highest concentration obtained removal of BOD5 15 mg/l, NH3 0.09 mg/l, NO3 0.81 mg/l, while that for COD that is 33.78 mg/l and DO highest increase is 5.5 mg/l. However, for PO43- parameter, it still exceeds the quality of waste water to be discharged into the outfall with the concentration of the Lamong River showed in 0.78 mg/l.
